Today was the longest treadmill interval workout since mid-July!!!  I was able to complete six miles of half-mile intervals (i.e., the slow halves at 9.2 miles per hour, while the fast halves at 11.2) in a time of 35:36.  I continued on at 11.2 for another tenth of a mile and another tenth at marathon pace to record a 10k time of 36:44 (i.e., 5:56 overall average pace).

In regards to my daily non-running workout, I completed 300 sit-ups, 30 push-ups, and a 100-second wall-sit.

5-minute Plank Challenge:  2:10 and 1:00 side planks both left and right (did these planks right after my interval workout; therefore, they were especially grueling)

Trying-To-Go-Out-Of-My-Way-To-Eat-Healthy Daily Challenge: vegetarian sandwich, whole-wheat pasta with a tuna white sauce, and a salad

Holy Moly! Slow @ 9.2 mph?!? Wow...yeah, you are SO out of MY league! That is amazing. I was thinking as I finished my 5 in just over 40 minutes how crazy it would be if I could run a 10K that fast....hahahaha. Now I'm just laughing heartily at myself after reading your post. Excellent intervals!! I like the TM for speed work, because it keeps me honest.

RAD, I totally know what you mean by the treadmill keeping you honest (if I'm off the treadmill and not running with anyone, I almost always slack off in regards to my pace). Only a few years ago, my interval workout consisted of the fast half miles at 7.5 mph and the recovery half miles at 6.0 mph. So it's just been really slow improvements; that is, baby steps. Plus, I really have improved my technique by leaning forward and just focusing on picking up my long legs behind me. In other words, the Chi Running form (it's a neat feeling when you have the forward lean just right that you feel that if you do not pick-up your legs, you will fall on your face). I can totally see you knocking out a sub-40:00 10k! You are absolutely in this league, just keep up the training!

Allie, thanks and I need to give a 2:40 plank another try (i.e., this is my current battle of the much larger 5-minute plank war).

Thanks for your confidence. SO many people see long legs/tall runners and say "oh wow, I wish I had long legs! I could run faster." What I don't think they understand is that it really is harder for longer legged runners to run. Not only do we have extra body weight (we're taller -duh!) to pack around, but it IS harder to pick up those long legs in the back. That is my biggest form issue running. I tend to shuffle instead of picking up my feet in the back and driving the knee forward. I've gotten better with posture recently (you have to learn to run tall when you have a baby in your gut while you run!), but may need to try the slight lean forward. I had an old running friend (old because he doesn't run anymore - not that he's OLD) read the chi running and school me on it during many runs. I should probably pick some of that back up!

RAD, sorry for the delayed response; that is, I have been meaning to respond to your post for some time. I also tend to shuffle at times and it's so difficult to pick up those legs. Every time I watch video of myself run, I just look so slow (i.e., just lumbering around the track) even though I'm trying to run as fast as possible. Also, I love how some people think that being tall is an enormous advantage because of the long legs. I read a biography on Johnny Kelly and the doctors told him that he was such an extraordinary runner because his torso was long relative to his legs. I tell people this, but Bolt blowing past everyone in the 100 and 200 is just killing our case. As a result, we'll just have to live with the hype.

Lastly, my sister got me into Chi Running and I really enjoyed reading the book (i.e., a terrific book on running form). The key is that you always want to try leaning forward from the ankles and just let gravity do its work. Keep at it!
